Hartwig of Bredow and the devil

retold and drawn by Eugen Gliege

In the area of the river Havel called Havelland there is told that some noble lords of manor made a deal with the devil for greedy reasons to become even richer.

Also Hartwig von Bredow, it is told in a saga ,was addicted to the devil that was useful to him too so that he could drive over stick and block without any harm. When he wanted to go even faster he flewthrough the sky without a notice of his coachman. Once he went in a rush from Berlin to his home and suddenly the waggon stood still and could not be moved any more. It seemed that it would be tied up at a iron hook. The coachman tried to jump off and wanted to see what he could do. But Hartwig ordered him to stay seated and to stay calm. It was not long when the horses moved on. The coachman was wondering but Hartwig sayed: "We went too close to the cross on the steeple of the church in Spandau. If you had gotten off the coach you would have broken your neck!!!"
