Lippold of Bredow and the deal with the devil

retold and drawn by Eugen Gliege

The lord of manor Lippold of Bredow had, as well as many other lords, a deal with the devil and promised him his soul if the devil gave him what he wants. Lippold had one condition that he was free if the devil didn`t give anything to him once. The deal was made on the Teufelsberg (devil`s hill) in the marshof Pohl that was named after him.

Then Lippold lived marvellous and in great joy and all of his wishes were satisfied. Although he asked for some unbelievable things but the devil did anything what he wanted. So he wanted to go over the lake of Kleeþen. Then the devil had to build a barrier right in the middle, so that he could go sraight on with his four-horse-coach. After the coach the devil had to brake off the barrier so that nobody could follow him.
