The rider without a head

retold and drawn by Eugen Gliege

Between the villages Quermathen and Gohlitz there is a small hill at a curve of the country road from Nauen to Brandenburg where an old tree is. This hill is called "Pfingstberg" in the vernacular.

Mrs protz from Nauen told mea story about this hill:

The lord of the manor Groþ Behnitz hadgot a daughter that was in love with a servant of that manor. The lord was furious about that and didn`t allow this love. Then the young lady decided to go away with her lover by horse. The father noticed that and followed them with his men. They caught them very soon. For punishment and in a violent temper he put a rope around the neck of his daughter and dragged the poor girl until the head was off. Then he let the dead body buried at that hill on the Pfingstberg.

Lateron people are supposed to have seen how a rider without a head went by horse from Pfingstberg to Neukammer and then to Lietzow along the Kuhdamm on foggy autumn days. They mean to have recognized the dead daughter of the lord of manor which still shall be haunting there.
